When choosing lapis lazuli, one should purchase a stone of gem quality that display a true azure color. As with any gemstone that is relatively low in price, choosing the finest of gem qualities is probably the wisest purchase.

To do this, it is recommended that you go to a specialty store that understands gemstones. It is pointless if the store does not carry gem quality in its showcases. Furthermore, because high-quality material is usually set in jewelry of exquisite design and superior workmanship, one should be mindful not to purchase something inexpensive without giving it full consideration.

The value of a two-gram- size lapis lazuli of jewelry quality is approximately US $300 for the stone alone (2004).
