HOW TO CHOOSE

If one is seeking an exceptional ruby with its asset value a prime consideration, the very rare 6-S “pigeon’s blood” is recommended. If beauty is the main consideration, 5-S can also be recommended. It is possible that these will become more scarce in the future.

In reality there are few stores that will market a stone with a guarantee that it is a Mogok ruby. However, it is advisable that the source be confirmed for stones of $10,000 or more. The differences are very minute, but Mogok ruby characteristics can often be recognized upon comparison. A bright pinkish color is characteristics of Mogok stones that are somewhat light in color, a consideration when choosing jewelry. Specifying country of origin in accessory-quality stones makes low-quality material appear more valuable to the consumer, and is something that the gemstone industry tries to avoid. However, in gem-quality stones costing more than $10,000, country of origin should be specified. This is an ongoing consideration for the jewelry industry.

The value of a one-carat-size Mogok ruby (heated) of jewelry quality is approximately US $3,000 for the stone alone (2004).
