HOW TO CHOOSE

The key in purchasing an alexandrite lies on evaluating the strength of the green-to-red color change. Keep in mind that the beauty of alexandrite’s green cannot compare to the beauty of the green seen in emerald. Of course, a good appearance and freedom from defects are important, but material without a change of color cannot be considered alexandrite. Furthermore, material showing a strong red even under sunlight may not be considered alexandrite. Gem-quality alexandrite is rare and expensive, with stones from one to three carats often ending up in gemstone collections. Jewelry-quality material with a good color change can be chosen from the standpoint of wearing something that is highly unusual.

The value of a one-carat-size alexandrite of jewelry quality is approximately US $4,000 for the stone alone. (2004)
