UNTREATED ZAMBIAN EMERALDS
HOW TO CHOOSE

Even if it is untreated, a stone lacking beauty is not considered a gemstone. Beauty is the prime consideration and an absolute requirement; if your budget permits, gem quality is recommended. Also, remember that even if there are a few visible imperfections in an untreated emerald, there is no need to be concerned about them becoming more noticeable. As long as such imperfections do not detract from the stone's beauty, a jewelry-quality emerald with a well-balanced appearance will be quite attractive. Emeralds are fragile gemstones, even if untreated. They need to be treated with care, and rings especially should be removed when exercising or working around the home.

The value of a one-carat-size, untreated Zambian emerald of jewelry quality is approximately US $6,000 for the stone alone. (2001)
