HOW TO CHOOSE

With boulder opal, choosing a store, or "who you buy from," is especially important. Jewelry with a doublet or triplet set in gold can be beautiful, and their prices will seem quite low compared to natural material. It is important not to mistake these for natural boulder opal and base a purchase decision on price alone.

The value of a boulder opal lies in the strength of the multi-colored flashes it displays. After first confirming this, compare a few stones in your price range, considering the shapes of the stones, the predominant colors of the patches, and whether they are full-face or partial-face. Currently, market prices of boulder opals are about one-fifth the price of black opals of similar beauty.

The value of a three-carat-size boulder opal of jewelry quality is approximately US $700 for the stone alone. (2001)
