THE FORM OF
THE SHANK

The shape and thickness of the shank (hoop) that is soldered to the bezel is important because it has a large effect on the mood of the whole ring. Each manufacturer decided what is best according to company policy, so it is not as if the decision has to be made for each bezel. However, knowing the shapes of shanks can help when checking a style for oneself.

The three examples shown here illustrate shank styles. Style A has a slightly thick from where it connects to the bezel. B is twisted, and C narrows as it connects to the bezel. Of course, the same shank size will look thin if the bezel is large, or thick if the bezel is small. In the case of a single-gemstone ring, the appropriate form and thickness will be based on the gem’s shape, size, and value. It is also true that the best-looking size and shape for a shank will differ depending on the wearer’s finger. Priority should be placed on the overall balance of the ring when it is worn. Being excessively particular about the form and thickness of the shank is not recommended.
